Merci Retriever

The Merci Retrievers® are a family of corkscrew-shaped products designed to remove blood clots from large vessels within the neurovasculature. Constructed of nitinol memory-wire, the Merci Retriever is delivered through the Merci® MC18L to the lesion location in its linear formation. Once deployed, the Retriever returns to its coiled shape to engage and retrieve the clot.

There are currently ten Merci Retrievers available to match vessel size. The newest generation of Retrievers, the V Series, incorporates features of the two earlier generations to create a best-in-class thrombectomy device. The V Series is designed such that the proximal loops stretch to engage the clot, while the two distal loops remain intact to capture the clot.

The Merci Retriever was first cleared for human use in 2004 by the FDA. Since 2004, the Merci Retriever has been used in more than 14,000 patients throughout the world including the United States, Europe, Australia, Singapore and Canada. In May 2010, the Merci Retriever was the first thrombectomy device to be approved in Japan, marking a significant advancement in stroke care for Japanese physicians and patients.

V 2.0: Designed for smaller, more distal vessels such as the M2

V 2.5: Designed for mid-sized vessels such as the M1 or Vertebral Arteries

V 3.0: Designed for larger, more proximal vessels such as the ICA and ICA-T

There are three L Retrievers to best match vessel size and anatomical need.

The X Retriever does not have filaments and has a tapered profile. This design allows for resheathing in vivo and is ideal for use in stented vessels.

Merci Retrievers are intended to restore blood flow in the neurovasculature by removing thrombus in patients experiencing ischemic stroke. Patients who are ineligible for intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (IV t-PA) or who fail IV t-PA therapy are candidates for treatment. Merci Retrievers are also indicated for use in the retrieval of foreign bodies misplaced during interventional radiological procedures in the neuro, peripheral and coronary vasculature.
